Cold Little Troll

"Brrrr! It's cold!"
The little troll said
"I'm numb to the bone,
from my toes to my head"
So the little troll
Built a little fire
Stick by stick
He added to the pyre
Soon the flames
Were burning quite high
"Ah! That's better!"
He said with a smile
But then a spark
Leapt from the flames
And scorched his fur
Then his clothes just the same
"Ouch!" he cried
And jumped all about
He rolled on the ground
To put the fire out
When he got up
He cursed at the fire
"Damn you! Damn you!"
But the flames rose higher
Then all the sudden
The fire died out
So the little troll
Exclaimed with a shout
"Come back, come back,
Don't leave me here to freeze!"
Answered only by a smolder
And a wisp of smoke through the trees
The little troll sat down
And pouted in the cold
Then an image came to him
And this is what it told

"Little troll, little troll,
heed these words I say.
Learn them well,
For they'll serve you each day:
Be thankful for what you have,
And for what you're given.
Curse not your folly
Nor the world you live in
Be thankful for the cold
For it brings the seasons change,
Blessed is the fire,
For it keeps the cold at bay.
Keep in your heart
The Earth's fond embrace
And hearken all the sounds
Of all Nature's display!"
The little troll thought
Upon all he had heard
And took it to heart
Each and every word
From then on he vowed
To cherish every minute
And every different season
All the wonder held within it
He stared at the embers
Of the fire he had scoffed
Realizing what he's gained
Not what he'd lost
The embers began to stir
The fire began anew
The little troll smiled
And thanked the Goddess too!
